Introduction:
Lake Balaton is the largest
fresh water lake in Central Europe, and a popular tourist destination. Due to
Hungary being landlocked, it is often referred to as the Hungarian Sea. On this
short break from Budapest we will explore this region with a private local
guide.
Enroute
to Balaton we will make a couple stops. Visit the 1,000 year old Benedictine
Abbey in Pannonhalma. The Baroque abbey was built on the holy mount of the Roman
province of Pannonia (Mons Sacer Pannonia), it is as old as the history of
Hungary itself. Then we stop to visit the Porcelain Factory in Herend. Finally
reaching Balatonfured; a small historic town on the northern shore of Lake
Balaton. Take a walk in the town, visit our monuments and sights, wander in the
surrounding hills and enjoy the sunset as it reflects on the water of the lake.
The
next day we will cross the lake to the historic town of Siklos and visit its
castle. Villany is the country of the cellars and high quality wines. We will
have a chance to visit the canteen of the golden medal priced Bock House
and enjoy wine tasting. Then arriving in Pecs for an overnight. Pécs has been
selected to be the European Capital of Culture in 2010 sharing the title
together with Essen and Istanbul.
Before returning to Budapest we will stop to visit Paks. This tour is
customizable and can be adjusted upon your request. For more details please
refer to the "Day by Day Itinerary".
